Our Story
Why Farmhouse was built
The story of our farmhouse is one that resonates with the spirit of following one’s dreams and never losing sight of what truly matters. The owner, who spent his childhood in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo surrounded by vast farmland and an abundance of horses and cows, carried those cherished memories with him as he ventured into the world.
After pursuing his passion for medicine and dedicating many years to working with the United Nations in different countries, he found himself yearning to build a place to retire on. A place where he could reconnect with his farming roots on his ancestral land and live out his days in harmony with nature. With a clear vision in mind, he set out to turn his dream into a reality.
Over the course of a decade, he purchased plot after plot of land in Kinigi, gradually amassing a sprawling 15-hectare farm. Each plot acquisition was a step closer to creating the idyllic retreat he envisioned. His commitment to organic farming, sustainability, and the well-being of animals fueled his efforts and shaped the ethos of the farm.
As the farm gradually took shape, the owner poured his heart and soul into cultivating the land. Creative ideas sprouted, and he implemented sustainable practices to ensure the farm aligned with his values. With a fervent passion for agriculture, he innovatively nurtured the soil, encouraged biodiversity, and created a sanctuary where nature could flourish.
The completion of his retirement home marked a significant milestone—a physical manifestation of his ambition and dedication. However, life doesn’t always adhere to our plans, other factors made it difficult to fully relocate to the farm. Instead, the family settled in the bustling city of Kigali, where the climate and surroundings better suited their preferences.
While his heart was anchored to the farm, the empty family estate held untapped potential. It was in that moment of reflection and contemplation that the idea began to germinate—to share the farm’s beauty and knowledge with others. Recognizing the opportunity to educate and inspire, the Farmhouse transformed into a hub of organic farming education and immersive farm-to-fork experiences.
Despite residing in Kigali, the owner remains deeply connected to his beloved farm. He spends as much time as possible tending to the land, brainstorming ways to enhance the farm’s offerings, and cultivating an environment where guests can connect with nature on a profound level.
The farmhouse not only serves as a testament to the owner’s unwavering dedication but also as a conduit for sharing the importance of sustainable practices and the joys of farm-to-fork culinary experiences. Each visitor who sets foot on the farm has the chance to witness firsthand the beauty of organic farming, to explore the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and the land we call home.
